Red Bull Stratos - 120,000 Feet FreeFall!!!!!!!!

Monday October 8th

Red Bull Stratos

Red Bull Stratos is a groundbreaking and courageous mission to the edge of space that has been in development for seven years. Its aim is to stretch human limits that have existed for almost 50 years and to advance scientific and medical understanding in space exploration and human flight.

In October, pilot Felix Baumgartner will undertake a stratospheric balloon flight to 120,000 feet / 36,576 meters from where he will attempt a record-breaking jump with the aim of becoming the first person to break the speed of sound in freefall without the intervention of a mechanical vehicle. Supported by a team of world-leading scientists, engineers and physicians – including Joe Kittinger himself – Felix will ascend to the upper reaches of the stratosphere in a pressurized capsule attached only to a helium balloon. In a hostile environment with too little oxygen to sustain human life, brutal extremes in temperature and air pressure less than one percent of that at sea level, he will jump from the capsule, protected only by his custom-made full-pressure suit and helmet. Roughly 35 seconds into his freefall, Felix is expected to break the speed of sound.

If successful, Felix Baumgartner and the mission team will provide data and establish critical health and safety protocols for existing and future aerospace programs worldwide. This is very much a step into the unknown; no freefall – let alone a supersonic one – has been completed successfully from the target altitude. However, the finest minds in research, long-term preparations, the most innovative technology and focus give Felix Baumgartner and the entire Red Bull Stratos team the confidence necessary to fulfill all mission objectives.

You will be able to watch the Stratos right here on Grimey Gatsby!!!! The live feed will be up the day of the event. Make sure to tune in and Spread the Grime!!!!
